MIDI Guide began as a passion project in 2019, aiming to simplify the complex world of MIDI implementations for synthesizers. The dataset, which is freely available under a CC-BY-SA 4.0 license, now includes contributions from 56 community members covering 321 instruments from 98 manufacturers. The project recently released Condukt, an app designed to enhance live performance by acting as a MIDI controller and sequencer for iOS, iPad, and macOS. Condukt allows musicians to control multiple synths simultaneously, inspired by the performance capabilities of the Elektron Analog Four MKII.

The dataset’s expansion has been driven by community contributions and the project’s practical utility, as it aids developers and musicians in creating and controlling music hardware and software.

Industry Context and Competition

The growth of MIDI Guide reflects broader trends in the music technology industry, where open-source projects and community-driven initiatives are becoming increasingly valuable. The dataset’s adoption by hardware manufacturers like Neuzeit and Reliq underscores its practical application and relevance. Neuzeit’s Drop MIDI controller and Reliq’s synth/studio device both utilize MIDI Guide’s dataset, showcasing its integration into cutting-edge musical equipment.

This development positions MIDI Guide as a key resource in the music technology ecosystem, providing a standardized reference that enhances interoperability between devices. It also highlights the demand for comprehensive, accessible MIDI documentation, which is crucial for both hobbyists and professional musicians.

Market Implications

The success of MIDI Guide and the launch of Condukt indicate a growing market for tools that simplify music creation and performance. As more devices and applications integrate the dataset, it could become a standard in the industry, facilitating easier development of new music technology products. The project’s open-source nature allows for continuous improvement and expansion, driven by a passionate community.

MIDI Guide’s growth also suggests a shift towards more collaborative and transparent development practices in the music tech industry. By providing a centralized resource, it reduces the barriers to entry for developers and musicians looking to innovate and create new solutions.

Looking Ahead

With its dataset now supporting over 300 instruments, MIDI Guide is poised to continue its influence in the music technology sector. The project’s ongoing expansion and the release of Condukt demonstrate its potential to shape the future of MIDI-based music creation and performance. As the community grows and more devices adopt the dataset, MIDI Guide is set to remain a vital resource for musicians and developers alike.
