Spring Highlights Impact Ventures Poised for Success at Web Summit
Share

Vancouver’s Spring, an ecosystem organization dedicated to nurturing impact-focused startups, has spotlighted four B.C.-based companies poised to make waves at the upcoming Web Summit. As the city gears up to host the international tech conference, Spring is drawing attention to these ventures for their potential to address pressing social and environmental issues while maintaining commercial viability.

### What These Startups Actually Do

The “Impact Ventures to Watch” list unveiled by Spring features companies like Gigsup, Mama Milk Innovations, PhyCo Technologies, and VEGAIN Nutrition. Each startup is carving out a niche in its respective field with a focus on community impact.

Gigsup, founded by Stephanie Brown, is Canada’s pioneering career intelligence platform designed for students. It employs data-driven insights and personalized tools to guide young people from self-exploration to actionable career paths. Within weeks of its debut, Gigsup attracted over 1,500 users and introduced its explainable career pathway engine, leveraging a proprietary model based on Values, Interests, Skills, and Identity (VISI).

Mama Milk Innovations, co-founded by Shaz Tayebi, Jonathan Tippett, and Vivek Balasubramanyam, is revolutionizing maternal health with a regulated medical device for breast pumping. Their prototype challenges the traditional belief that greater suction is the key to effective milk expression. The startup has raised over $600,000 in pre-seed funding and secured WIPO international patent approval, setting the stage for a fast-track U.S. application.

PhyCo Technologies, led by Ranah Chavoshi and Stacey Goldberg, is tackling plastic pollution with seaweed-based biomaterials. Partnering with Indigenous communities, this ClimateTech company aims to provide sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics.

### Competitive Context

Spring’s initiative highlights the often-overlooked impact ventures within B.C.’s bustling tech scene, home to over 11,000 tech companies and about 220,000 workers. Despite the province’s tech prowess, impact-focused startups frequently struggle to capture mainstream attention and investor interest compared to their more traditional tech counterparts.

The companies on Spring’s list have already achieved various forms of recognition and support. Gigsup has benefited from non-dilutive funding through programs like IRAP and Mitacs and has been recognized in competitions such as the Innovate BC Founder Faceoff. Meanwhile, Mama Milk Innovations’ patent approvals and funding successes position it well to compete in the growing HealthTech market.

### Real Implications for Founders, Engineers, and the Industry

For founders and engineers, Spring’s focus on impact ventures underscores the potential to balance profitability with purpose. The highlighted companies exemplify how addressing societal challenges can coexist with building scalable businesses. Engineers, in particular, may find inspiration in the technical innovation these startups are pursuing, from Gigsup’s data-driven career tools to PhyCo’s biomaterial development.

Investors might take note of the growing appeal of impact investing, as these ventures align with the rising demand for sustainable and socially responsible business practices. The $15.3 million catalyzed through Spring’s Scale Ready program in just eight months suggests a fertile ground for investment in impact-driven startups.

### Looking Ahead

As the Web Summit approaches, the spotlight on these B.C. startups offers them a global stage to attract potential investors and partners. Founders should prepare to leverage this visibility to secure further funding and increase market reach. For engineers and product managers, the focus on impact ventures could herald more opportunities to work on projects that align with personal values and contribute to societal betterment.

Ultimately, the attention drawn by Spring may signal a shift towards valuing impact as much as innovation in the tech industry, encouraging a new generation of startups to pursue not just profit, but purpose.
