Netflix Unveils AI Model for Video Editing
Netflix has introduced a new AI model, Video Object and Interaction Deletion (VOID), capable of removing objects from videos while seamlessly updating the footage. This development highlights the growing role of AI in video editing and its potential applications in the film industry.
### Netflix’s VOID Model
VOID is a vision-language model designed to edit specific elements out of video content, allowing the remaining footage to proceed as if no changes occurred. An example provided by Netflix involves two cars racing towards each other. In the original footage, the cars crash, but with VOID, one car can be removed, and the other continues without interruption. This capability positions VOID as a potentially valuable tool for filmmakers seeking to streamline post-production processes.
Netflix’s research paper compared VOID to existing AI editing tools such as Runway, Generative Omnimatte, and ProPainter. In a survey conducted with 25 participants across five scenarios, VOID was preferred 64.8% of the time. However, the limited sample size raises questions about the generalizability of these findings.

While VOID offers promising capabilities, it enters a competitive landscape with existing tools that provide similar functionalities. Platforms like Runway and ProPainter have already established themselves in the market, offering AI-driven video editing solutions. Netflix aims to differentiate VOID by showcasing its ability to preserve the integrity of objects, such as a guitar or ball, even when the interacting human is removed.
