Agentic Coding is a Trap | Lars Faye

Agentic Coding: A Trap for Developers?

The tech world is buzzing with the idea that traditional coding is on its last legs, replaced by AI-driven Spec Driven Development (SDD). In this model, humans define project requirements and plans, while AI agents take over implementation. The human role becomes one of oversight, providing “good taste” and steering the AI’s output. But is this shift truly beneficial, or are we losing something vital in the process?

Agentic coding promises to streamline development, but not without trade-offs. The complexity of surrounding systems increases to manage AI’s unpredictability. Skills atrophy as developers engage less with actual coding. There’s also the risk of vendor lock-in, as seen with Claude Code outages halting entire teams. Costs fluctuate with token usage, unlike the fixed expense of human employees. Success hinges on skilled developers who can critically assess generated code—a skillset AI use might erode.

Proponents argue that programmers are simply moving up the stack, but this shift isn’t just about abstraction. Unlike past technological changes, the rapid adoption of AI tools is already impacting developers’ abilities. Junior developers face a steeper learning curve, as their exposure to code is reduced to reviewing AI outputs. This diminishes their growth, as hands-on coding is crucial for developing problem-solving skills.

Senior engineers aren’t immune either. AI tools can cloud cognitive clarity, making it harder to understand applications and their functionalities. This creates a paradox: effective AI supervision requires coding skills that might atrophy through overreliance on AI. As Sandor Nyako from LinkedIn highlights, critical thinking is essential to question AI accuracy, yet AI use may stifle that very skill.

The financial model of AI tooling also raises concerns. Token costs are unpredictable, creating budgetary challenges for teams reliant on agentic coding. This could lead to a future where developers must pay for token consumption to achieve tasks once handled by their own problem-solving abilities. The risk of industry-wide vendor lock-in looms, with limited alternatives for scaling local AI models.

What does this mean for developers, founders, and investors? While AI tools offer productivity gains, they shouldn’t replace direct engagement with code. Developers should use AI as a secondary tool, enhancing their work without sacrificing their skills. Founders and investors must consider the long-term implications of AI dependency, balancing short-term efficiency with sustainable skill development. As AI continues to evolve, the challenge will be to integrate it responsibly, ensuring it complements rather than compromises human expertise.
