New Publishing Requirements & Evaluation Process for Games

Roblox Introduces New Game Publishing Requirements to Enhance Safety

Roblox, the popular online gaming platform, has announced a significant change to its game publishing model, aimed at enhancing safety for users under 16. Starting May 19, new requirements will be implemented for publishing games, particularly those accessible to younger audiences. This move is designed to maintain trust with users, parents, and policymakers and ensure compliance with evolving regulatory standards.

Roblox’s New Publishing Model

Roblox’s updated publishing requirements will introduce a tiered approach. Creators can continue to publish games for personal use without additional steps. However, games intended for users over 16 and "Trusted Friends" will require an age check, a good standing account, and a minimum account age of two days. For games targeting younger audiences, additional criteria include ID verification, two-factor authentication, a Roblox Plus subscription, and a new evaluation process.

These measures aim to enhance the safety of games available to younger users and prevent bad actors from bypassing moderation systems. The company has noted a reduction in violating games following previous requirement updates and expects further improvements with these changes.

Industry Context and Competition

Roblox’s decision to tighten its publishing requirements comes amid growing scrutiny over online safety for children. As digital platforms face increased pressure from regulators and parents alike, Roblox’s proactive stance could set a precedent for other gaming and social platforms. By implementing stringent measures, Roblox aims to align with global safety standards and maintain its accessibility across different regions.

The introduction of the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework further underscores Roblox’s commitment to providing clear, region-specific content ratings. This move is expected to help families identify age-appropriate content, reinforcing the platform’s alignment with global safety norms.

Implications for the Gaming Industry

These changes may impact the growth trajectory of new games on Roblox, especially those without an established audience. The evaluation process could lengthen the time it takes for games to reach younger users, potentially affecting developers targeting this demographic. However, Roblox has expressed its commitment to improving discovery for new games, aiming to expedite this process.

The requirement for a Roblox Plus subscription introduces a financial barrier for bad actors while supporting legitimate creators. Roblox is offering a six-month Plus subscription to eligible existing creators to ease the transition.

Future Developments

As Roblox rolls out these new requirements, the company will host an AMA on its DevForum to address questions and provide further insights. The platform’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety and compliance could influence industry standards, particularly as digital platforms navigate the complex landscape of online safety and regulation.
