Graeme Barlow’s Founders Dinner Expands to Alberta

These dinners are part of Barlow’s FounderLink initiative, designed to foster genuine connections among North American startup founders in a sales-free environment.

The Founders Dinner series is an invite-only event that gathers 20 to 30 entrepreneurs for an evening of networking without the pressure of sales pitches. Held at Edmonton’s Sabor on February 10, and scheduled for Calgary on February 12, these events feature pre-meal discussions and guided sharing sessions. The seating arrangement is carefully planned to encourage new connections. Barlow emphasizes the importance of storytelling and personal connections, steering clear of politics and sales to create a relaxed atmosphere.

Barlow’s approach addresses the isolation often felt by founders. “Building community is crucial because the journey of being a founder can be both rewarding and isolating,” he said. The dinners aim to provide a supportive space where entrepreneurs can share experiences and insights.

### A Curated Networking Opportunity

The Founders Dinner series distinguishes itself by carefully curating its guest list. Each dinner ensures a mix of 50 percent late-stage founders or those who have exited a company, 25 percent growth-stage founders, and 25 percent early-stage entrepreneurs. This balance is intended to foster a rich exchange of ideas and experiences, setting it apart from other networking events that may lack structure or diversity in attendee experience.

Barlow’s frustration with traditional networking events, where founders often find themselves surrounded by service providers rather than peers, inspired the creation of these dinners. By focusing on founders, the series aims to provide meaningful interactions and support.

### Implications for the Startup Ecosystem

The expansion of the Founders Dinner series to Alberta highlights the growing need for supportive networks within the Canadian startup ecosystem. By targeting traditionally underserved locales, Barlow is addressing a gap in the market for founder-focused events outside major tech hubs. This move could encourage more regional networking opportunities, fostering growth and collaboration among Canadian startups.

Barlow’s initiative reflects a broader trend in the industry towards community-building and peer support. As startups navigate the challenges of growth and competition, such events provide a platform for sharing knowledge and building alliances.

The next steps for the Founders Dinner series involve continuing to expand its reach and impact, potentially inspiring similar initiatives across Canada. By creating spaces where entrepreneurs can connect without the pressure of sales, Barlow is contributing to a more supportive and connected startup landscape.
