Anthropic has posted two Canadian jobs: a compute country lead charged with bringing “gigawatts of compute online in Canada,” and an Alberta-based community engagement manager to coordinate “charitable giving, community investment, and economic development commitments” in the province. Anthropic confirmed both postings to BetaKit but declined to say why Alberta.

The job listing for the compute lead covers site selection, leasing, financing, construction oversight and government relations across Canada and the US. The Logic reports the role also covers securing power supply and lobbying governments — infrastructure work, not a single facility.

Connect CRE Canada calls this Anthropic’s first direct signal it intends to build computing infrastructure in Canada rather than rent cloud capacity. The Logic corroborates that reading, noting Anthropic has so far mostly bought compute rather than constructed its own sites.

Alberta already has competing bets

Meta announced what HCAMag and BetaKit both put at roughly C$13 billion for what would be Canada’s largest data centre, north of Edmonton, last month. Saskatchewan has its own C$12-billion Bell Canada partnership, per HCAMag. Alberta’s technology minister has been courting data centre operators publicly, per BetaKit’s prior reporting.

Anthropic has prior Canadian ties. HCAMag notes a previous C$10-million commitment to eight Canadian research institutions. BetaKit reported this month that Anthropic hired Amazon’s former head of Canadian public policy, Jacob Glick, into a similar country-lead role.

The community engagement posting asks for liaison work with municipalities and residents alongside economic development coordination. BetaKit cites Angus Reid polling showing public wariness toward data centres, and notes CEO Dario Amodei has spoken about rebuilding public trust. Pairing a site-acquisition hire with a community-relations hire signals Anthropic is staffing for local pushback before any ground is broken.

Connect CRE Canada is explicit that Anthropic has not announced a specific project, site, investment figure or construction timeline. Google, Microsoft and Meta already operate or have named Canadian data centre sites. Anthropic, for now, has two job postings and a declined comment on Alberta.
