AI Control Gaps: 72% of Firms Misjudge Security, Says Mirai

The AI governance mirage: Why 72% of enterprises don’t have the control and security they think they do

Share

AI governance is facing a reality check as 72% of enterprises believe they have control over their AI systems, yet many lack the necessary security and oversight. A recent VentureBeat survey of 40 enterprise companies reveals that most organizations use multiple AI platforms, creating sprawling systems vulnerable to AI-driven attacks. This is a significant concern for technical and security leaders, as the attack surfaces expand without proper governance.

### The Mirage of Control

Enterprises are rushing to adopt AI technologies from giants like Microsoft Azure, Google, and OpenAI. However, instead of building a cohesive strategy, many are cobbling together disparate systems. Mass General Brigham (MGB), for example, halted numerous internal AI projects due to lack of control. They now rely on software giants to deliver AI solutions, yet still find themselves creating custom builds to address security gaps.

This patchwork approach is common. Companies like MGB are forced to build additional layers around existing AI tools to protect sensitive data, highlighting the contradictions in relying on vendors who haven’t fully addressed security concerns. Despite the intent to leverage existing AI offerings, enterprises are inadvertently creating complex systems that require further investment in orchestration.

### The Vendor Dilemma

The AI landscape is fragmented, with enterprises struggling to manage multiple vendors. This situation is akin to the “six blind men” analogy, where each vendor offers a different piece of the puzzle, leaving companies without a clear picture. The lack of a unified control plane means many organizations operate in a “swivel chair” environment, switching between tools without seamless integration.

Red Hat’s Brian Gracely warns of the hidden costs of initial AI adoption. While starting a project is easy, scaling it sustainably is challenging. Enterprises often find themselves locked into proprietary ecosystems, making it difficult to switch providers without incurring technical debt. This is a trap many fall into, mistaking early wins for long-term success.

### Implications for the Industry

For founders and engineers, the message is clear: be wary of vendor lock-in and the illusion of control. The current AI governance model is a “mirage,” with many companies lacking the accountability and transparency needed for effective oversight. Enterprises must strive for independent control planes to avoid becoming overly dependent on a single provider.

MassMutual’s approach of maintaining flexibility by avoiding long-term vendor contracts is a strategy worth considering. As the AI market evolves rapidly, betting on a single provider could be risky. The rise of companies like Anthropic, which quickly gained traction, underscores the dynamic nature of the industry.

### Looking Ahead

The path forward requires a shift towards a unified control plane that offers comprehensive visibility and security. Enterprises need the equivalent of a “Dynatrace for AI” to monitor and manage their systems effectively. Without this, the risk of fragmented governance and security vulnerabilities remains high.

The future of AI governance lies in balancing independence with integration, ensuring enterprises maintain control without sacrificing flexibility. As the AI landscape continues to shift, companies must be proactive in defining their governance strategies to navigate the complexities of multi-platform environments.
