L-Spark Shifts Focus with First Corporate Accelerator Cohort
L-Spark, an Ottawa-based accelerator, has successfully completed its first cohort as a corporate accelerator, partnering with communications service giant Mitel. This marks a strategic pivot for L-Spark, which has moved away from its original focus on software-as-a-service (SaaS) startups to facilitate collaborations between startups and large corporations. The inaugural Mitel Unified Communications Accelerator featured eight companies from Canada, the US, and Europe, showcasing their advancements in AI capabilities for Mitel’s platforms.
### L-Spark’s New Direction
L-Spark’s transformation into a corporate accelerator comes in response to a slowdown in Canada’s early-stage venture market. Executive Managing Director Leo Lax highlighted the opportunity to leverage corporate balance sheets to support innovation. The accelerator’s new model aims to match startups with corporations to enhance existing offerings, as demonstrated by the collaboration with Mitel.
Canadian startups Intelocate, MicroMetrics, and Zendelity were among the cohort participants, along with international companies such as TeamMate and MosaicVoice from the US, and Typewise from Zurich. Mitel’s CTO, Luiz Domingos, emphasized the tangible benefits for customers through the integration of these startups’ technologies with Mitel’s platforms.
### Industry Context and Implications
The shift in L-Spark’s focus reflects broader trends in the tech industry, where accelerators are increasingly looking to facilitate corporate partnerships. This model not only provides startups with market access but also helps corporations innovate faster by integrating cutting-edge technologies. Lax noted that the corporate accelerator model allows for quicker market traction compared to traditional SaaS accelerators.
For example, MosaicVoice secured a significant contract through the program, while MicroMetrics expanded its client base to include notable hotels. These successes illustrate the potential for startups to achieve rapid growth and market entry through strategic partnerships.
### Future Prospects
While the future of the Mitel partnership remains undecided until March, L-Spark has already secured a new collaboration with Telus. This initiative will involve recruiting startups to utilize Telus’s specialized data centers for developing compute-intensive products. Lax also expressed hope that future corporate partners might invest directly in startups, further closing the loop in fostering innovation.
The completion of this first cohort underscores the potential for corporate accelerators to drive innovation and growth, positioning L-Spark as a key player in this evolving landscape.
