Ubisoft and Konami Unveil Solid Snake in Rainbow Six Siege

Ubisoft Montreal and Konami have teamed up to introduce Solid Snake, the iconic hero from the Metal Gear series, into the popular multiplayer shooter Rainbow Six Siege X. This marks the first time a character from outside the Tom Clancy universe has joined the game, expanding its roster of 76 Operators. The collaboration was announced at the Six Invitationals Siege esports tournament in Paris.

The decision to bring Snake into Siege was driven by Ubisoft’s desire to expand its universe with a beloved gaming icon. The collaboration began years ago with the introduction of Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell, and the idea of adding Snake emerged during those discussions. Konami’s Yuji Korekado highlighted the previous collaboration between the companies, which included crossovers with Assassin’s Creed.

Konami and Ubisoft chose the version of Snake from the period between Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2, fitting him into Siege’s “parallel world.” The partnership involved detailed planning, with Ubisoft impressing Konami with its comprehensive pitches and commitment to the Metal Gear franchise.

### Industry Impact and Future Directions

This collaboration is significant for both companies, as it merges two iconic gaming franchises. For Konami, it offers an opportunity to introduce Metal Gear to a new audience, while Ubisoft benefits from the added depth and appeal Snake brings to Siege. The partnership also reflects a growing trend of crossovers in the gaming industry, as companies seek to expand their universes and engage players with familiar characters.

The introduction of Snake is part of Siege’s Year 11 roadmap, which includes a limited-time 4v4 infiltration mode featuring Snake and Sam Fisher. This crossover allows fans to explore the dynamics between these two legendary characters, something long anticipated by the gaming community.

### What’s Next?

The collaboration begins with Season 1, Operation Silent Hunt, launching on March 3. Rainbow Six Siege X remains free-to-play across multiple platforms, including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Amazon Luna. This partnership is expected to draw new players and increase engagement, highlighting the potential for future cross-franchise collaborations in the gaming industry.
