Zero Point Cryogenics Powers Quantum Leap in Edmonton
Zero Point Cryogenics (ZPC), based in Edmonton, Alberta, is at the forefront of manufacturing the extreme-cold systems essential for quantum computing. Co-founded by Chris Cassin and Dr. John P. Davis, ZPC is one of only six companies globally producing commercial dilution refrigerators. These systems use Helium-3 to achieve temperatures near absolute zero, crucial for maintaining the delicate balance of qubits in quantum computers.
ZPC’s journey began as an academic project spearheaded by Davis, a low-temperature physicist at the University of Alberta. Frustrated by the limitations of existing cryogenic systems, Davis aimed to create more reliable and compact solutions. The company, now operating from a 6,300-square-foot facility, has expanded its workforce to 40 and expects to double that in the next 18 months. ZPC’s dilution refrigerators, smaller and modular compared to traditional systems, have already found clients worldwide, including the National Research Council of Canada.
The global race to develop quantum technology is heating up, with tech giants like Google and Amazon investing heavily. However, these advancements depend on the cryogenic infrastructure provided by companies like ZPC. The Canadian government is also supporting this sector through initiatives like the Canadian Quantum Champions Program. ZPC’s strategic location in Alberta offers cost advantages over competitors in the US and Europe, further bolstering its position in the market.
As quantum technology continues to evolve, ZPC is preparing for further growth. The company is exploring a move to a larger facility and has initiated its first fundraising round to support expansion efforts. With increasing interest from Canada’s defense sector and a closed-loop manufacturing process ensuring high quality and security, ZPC is poised to play a significant role in advancing quantum research and development.
