Indigenous Tech Circle to Host Canada’s Largest Indigenous Tech Conference
The Indigenous Tech Circle (ITC) is set to host its inaugural Indigenous Tech Conference, bringing together over 250 Indigenous founders, tech professionals, investors, community partners, and policymakers. Scheduled for January 20-21 at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel, the event aims to be the largest gathering of Indigenous individuals in the Canadian tech sector.
Building Connections in the Tech Ecosystem
Founded by Métis entrepreneur Ryan St. Germaine, ITC was established to enhance Indigenous presence and leadership within the Canadian tech ecosystem. After selling his job board network in 2020, St. Germaine sought to connect with other Indigenous tech professionals. This led to the formation of ITC in 2021, which has since grown into a national network hosting various programs, workshops, and meetups.
St. Germaine emphasizes the importance of breaking down silos and providing Indigenous tech professionals with equal access to opportunities. “It’s crucial for Indigenous folks to be better connected to the broader ecosystem,” he stated.
Conference Highlights and Industry Implications
The conference will focus on how Indigenous innovators are making strides in tech, with sessions on data sovereignty, AI, and economic empowerment. Attendees will benefit from workshops on public relations and investment readiness, as well as founder showcases. A key feature will be the Indigenous Venture Challenge, a $50,000 initiative connecting Indigenous startups with investors.
Speakers include notable figures such as Bobbie Racette of Virtual Gurus and Jeff Ward of Animikii, who will share insights on building and scaling Indigenous-led tech companies. The event aims to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing across the tech landscape.
Looking Ahead
The Indigenous Tech Conference is poised to become an annual flagship event for ITC, highlighting the contributions of Indigenous innovators and encouraging the next generation of tech leaders. St. Germaine sees this as a pivotal moment for Indigenous communities to engage with emerging technologies and create lasting value. “There are opportunities to build generational wealth and innovate in ways that are desperately needed,” he noted.
