Google Launches Offline AI Dictation App for iOS

Google has quietly introduced “Google AI Edge Eloquent,” an offline-first AI dictation app available on iOS. This move positions Google in direct competition with established players such as Wispr Flow, SuperWhisper, and Willow. The app is designed to enhance user convenience by enabling offline dictation and offering advanced text processing capabilities.

Google AI Edge Eloquent is a free-to-download app that utilizes Gemma-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) models. Once these models are downloaded, users can dictate on their iOS devices without needing an internet connection. The app provides live transcription and automatically refines the text by removing filler words like “um” and “ah.”

Users can transform their transcriptions into various formats, including “Key points,” “Formal,” “Short,” and “Long.” The app also offers a cloud mode option, utilizing Gemini models for enhanced text cleanup, and allows the import of specific keywords from Gmail. Users can customize the app further by adding personal jargon or names to the vocabulary list.

## Competitive Landscape

The release of Google AI Edge Eloquent marks Google’s entry into a competitive market of AI-powered dictation apps. Existing competitors such as Wispr Flow and SuperWhisper have already established themselves with similar functionalities. Wispr Flow, for instance, recently raised $30 million to enhance its AI-powered dictation capabilities.

Google’s app differentiates itself by offering offline functionality, a feature that could appeal to users concerned about data privacy and connectivity issues. The app’s ability to function as a default keyboard on Android, once available, will further integrate it into users’ daily workflows, challenging existing Android-based solutions.

## Implications for the Market

The launch of Google AI Edge Eloquent underscores the growing demand for AI-driven transcription solutions. As speech-to-text models improve, users are increasingly seeking efficient and accurate dictation tools. Google’s entry into this space highlights the tech giant’s commitment to leveraging AI for practical applications.

The app’s offline capabilities and integration potential with Android systems suggest a strategic move to capture a broader user base. If successful, this could lead to enhanced transcription features across Google’s ecosystem, potentially influencing industry standards and user expectations.

Looking ahead, the development of an Android version of Google AI Edge Eloquent could further disrupt the market. As Google continues to refine its AI technologies, the company is well-positioned to expand its influence in the growing field of AI-powered productivity tools.
