In a significant funding round, Bengaluru-based food delivery startup Swish has raised $38 million in a new Series B round, valuing the company at $139 million post-money. The funding comes as ultra-fast food delivery remains a challenging business to sustain in India, with larger platforms such as Swiggy, Zepto, and Zomato scaling back or shutting down their rapid-delivery experiments.
The Secret to Swish’s Success
Swish’s 10-minute fresh food delivery service has attracted investor interest due to its unique full-stack business model. The startup owns its kitchens, supply chain, and delivery network, allowing it to focus on dense, hyperlocal clusters with delivery radii of around 1 kilometer. This approach gives Swish better economics compared to marketplace platforms that must rely on third-party restaurant commissions.
Expanding Reach
The funding will be used to expand Swish’s operations within Bengaluru and into other areas such as Delhi-NCR and Mumbai. The startup is currently delivering about 20,000 orders a day, up from roughly 5,000 four months ago, with plans to continue growing its user base.
A Recipe for Success
Swish’s focus on automating kitchen operations has enabled the company to support faster delivery and consistency. Co-founder and CEO Aniket Shah attributes the startup’s success to its ability to offer a high-quality service that is almost akin to having a restaurant kitchen deliver food directly to customers’ tables.
What’s Next?
As Swish expands into new markets, it will be interesting to see if investor enthusiasm proves justified. The company’s business model remains dependent on dense urban clusters and high-order volumes. Only time will tell whether Swish can continue its rapid growth trajectory and become a major player in the Indian food delivery market.
With this significant funding round, Swish is poised to continue disrupting the Indian food delivery landscape. As the startup expands its reach, it will be worth keeping an eye on its progress as it navigates the challenges of the ultra-fast food delivery space.
