Waymo’s Unusual Request: DoorDash Drivers to the Rescue

Waymo, a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, is facing an unexpected challenge with its self-driving cars. In a bid to keep its fleet operational, Waymo has enlisted DoorDash drivers to close car doors left ajar by passengers. This peculiar arrangement highlights the practical hurdles of deploying autonomous vehicles in real-world settings.

Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has been at the forefront of developing self-driving technology. Its vehicles are now operational in six cities, offering a glimpse into a future of driverless transportation. Recently, the company raised $16 billion to expand its operations internationally. Despite these advancements, the vehicles are susceptible to being immobilized if a passenger leaves a door open. To address this, Waymo has partnered with DoorDash, offering drivers a small fee to close the doors and keep the vehicles on the move.

### Context and Competition

The collaboration between Waymo and DoorDash is part of a broader strategy to enhance the efficiency of Waymo’s autonomous fleet. In Atlanta, DoorDash drivers are notified when a Waymo vehicle is in need of assistance, receiving $6.25 for the task, with a bonus for verified completion. This is not the first time Waymo has sought external help for door-related issues. In Los Angeles, the company has partnered with Honk, a towing service app, to perform similar tasks, paying up to $24 per job. These partnerships underscore the complexities and unexpected challenges of integrating autonomous vehicles into existing urban environments.

### Industry Implications

Waymo’s reliance on gig economy workers to resolve operational issues raises questions about the readiness of autonomous technology for widespread use. While the company plans to implement automated door closures in future models, the current situation highlights the ongoing need for human intervention in seemingly minor aspects of autonomous vehicle operations. This reliance on gig workers not only impacts the efficiency of the service but also reflects the broader challenges faced by the industry as it navigates the transition to fully autonomous transportation.

As Waymo continues to refine its technology, the partnership with DoorDash serves as a stopgap measure to maintain service continuity. This situation illustrates the evolving landscape of autonomous vehicles and the innovative solutions companies are employing to address unforeseen obstacles.
