UBC Develops Teledentistry App for Seniors’ Dental Care
The University of British Columbia (UBC) has introduced ToothPortal, a mobile app designed to enhance dental care access for seniors in long-term care facilities. Developed by Dr. Chris Wyatt and the UBC Geriatric Dentistry Program, the app allows caregivers to securely upload patient information and photos for remote assessment by dental professionals.
Addressing Access Challenges
ToothPortal aims to tackle the persistent issue of dental care accessibility for frail seniors, a problem exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Traditionally, transferring patients to dental clinics involves significant logistical challenges, often requiring a full day for appointments. By enabling remote triage, the app streamlines the process, allowing dental teams to assess urgency and schedule necessary treatments more efficiently.
Implications for Dental Care
The app not only improves access but also serves as a training tool for UBC dental students. Starting January 2025, students have been using ToothPortal to gather data and images, which are then reviewed by senior students for treatment. This integration of digital triage and hands-on care provides a comprehensive learning experience and has already demonstrated its effectiveness in real-world applications.
Future Potential
The scalability of ToothPortal extends beyond long-term care facilities. Its generic design allows for potential use in remote areas, where healthcare professionals can utilize the app to determine the necessity of patient transport for dental care. This innovation represents a significant step toward reducing unnecessary appointments and improving communication between patients, families, and healthcare providers. As the app continues to evolve, it could play a crucial role in transforming dental care delivery across various settings.
