Founded in 2023, Sarvam has quickly positioned itself in the AI space, raising $41 million from investors such as Lightspeed Venture Partners and Khosla Ventures. The Indus app, currently in beta, allows users to interact via text or voice, with responses available in both formats. While the app is initially limited to India, it represents Sarvam’s ambition to cater to local needs with its language models.

### Context and Competition

India is emerging as a key battleground for generative AI technologies. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has over 100 million weekly active users in the country, and Anthropic reports significant usage of its Claude model. Sarvam’s entry with Indus highlights the growing interest in developing domestic alternatives to these global platforms, aiming to provide solutions tailored specifically for the Indian market.

### Market Implications

The launch of Indus could signal a shift in the AI landscape in India, as local startups challenge established international players. Sarvam’s partnerships with companies like HMD and Bosch indicate a strategic move to integrate AI into various sectors, including feature phones and automotive applications. As Sarvam expands its compute capacity, the availability and functionality of Indus are expected to grow.

The next phase for Sarvam involves expanding access to the Indus app and gathering user feedback to refine its offerings. This move not only underscores the competitive nature of the AI market in India but also reflects a broader trend of local innovation in response to global technological advancements.
