MiniMax Unveils M2.5 Models at Fraction of Competitor Cost

MiniMax's new open M2.5 and M2.5 Lightning near state-of-the-art while costing 1/20th of Claude Opus 4.6

Share

Chinese AI startup MiniMax has unveiled its latest language model, M2.5, promising near state-of-the-art performance at a fraction of the cost of leading competitors. Released as open-source on Hugging Face under a modified MIT License, M2.5 aims to democratize access to high-end AI capabilities by slashing costs by up to 95% compared to models like Claude Opus 4.6.

MiniMax’s New Offering

MiniMax, based in Shanghai, has introduced two variants of the M2.5 model: the Standard and the Lightning. The Lightning version is optimized for speed, delivering 100 tokens per second, while the Standard version focuses on cost efficiency. The model’s architecture leverages a Mixture of Experts (MoE) system, activating only a portion of its 230 billion parameters during operations, thus maintaining efficiency and performance.

Competitive Landscape

The release of M2.5 positions MiniMax as a formidable player in the AI landscape, offering capabilities that rival top-tier models from industry giants like Google and Anthropic. The model’s cost efficiency is underscored by its pricing strategy, where enterprises can deploy AI workers at a fraction of the cost of competing proprietary models. This shift is likely to challenge established players and spur further innovation in cost-effective AI solutions.
